LGBT Pride Month

GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally and internationally.

"As an LGTB service member, my military has spanned seclusion, exclusion and then finally inclusion," said Maj. Gen. Patricia Rose, Mobilization Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Engineering and Force Protection, the highest ranking openly gay Air Force member.

The focus has always been on what is best for the men and women who serve in the Air Force, she added.  Diversity and inclusion, the general said, send a powerful message about democracy and strengthen the force.

"One of the most potent tools in our arsenal is our diversity," said Rose.

On June 2, Anthony M. Kurta, Under Secretary of Defense personnel and readiness, wrote in a memo announcing the observance.

"The struggles, sacrifices and successes among the LGBT community continue to shape our history and remind us to uphold tolerance and justice for all.  Integrity and respect are fundamental qualities of our military and civilian culture. As we celebrate the diversity of the total force, we honor all who have answered the call to serve and their unwavering commitment to our shared mission. During the month of June, let us celebrate the diversity of the DoD workforce and rededicate ourselves to equity, dignity and respect for all."

Cultural observances are conducted to recognize the continuous achievements of all Americans to American culture and to increase awareness, mutual respect and understanding. They are designed to enhance cross-cultural and cross-gender awareness and promote harmony among all military members, their families and the civilian workforce.
