Sounds of chatter fill the room, a mixture of Airmen, Soldiers and Marines find their seats and prepare to ask or answer a variety of questions regarding military career and lifestyle. This is the beginning of the speed mentoring event, the kickoff event in a series scheduled on base for Women’s History Month hosted by the 17th Training Support Squadron at the Airman and Family Readiness Center March 12.

The sessions were moderated by a time-keeper who let everyone know when it was time for the mentors to rotate. Each mentor had between 10-12 minutes to answer questions, share career stories or give advice about being in the military. The mentees could ask questions from a sample list or one of their own. Participants were encouraged to ask questions about leadership, making a positive impact or how to handle negative situations.

“A part of knowing what you want to do in the military is knowing yourself, self-reflection is so important,” said Chief Master Sgt. Susan Mace, 315th Training Squadron guest mentor. “Even if you can only work in 10 minutes a day, still take that time for yourself.”

Each mentor spoke with two individuals, while the time-keeper would make sure everyone stayed on track.

“What a great thing to be able to do,” said Maj. Lindsey Bergeron, 315th Training Squadron director of operations. “To sit down with leaders and get advice or ask what can we do better, or where do you see us going? This is something that sets us apart from most civilian companies.”

In conclusion Master Sgt. Stephanie Zengerle, 315th TRS flight chief, thanked everyone for coming and let the participants know about a similar group ‘The Lean In Circle’ that any service member may join. This group is focused on mentoring and helping everyone “lean in” and be there for each other.
