Thirty children, ages 8-12, from the San Angelo area spent the week from June 20 - 25 learning about the dangers of drugs and alcohol from 15 volunteer mentors on Goodfellow.

Drug Education for Youth, a program sponsored by the Navy, engages children in activities designed to keep them away from drugs. This year's program was held at the base chapel annex.

This year's DEFY program included a visit from Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Shawn Baxter, where the children were able to test out "drunk goggles" to get a feel of what it's like to be under the influence of alcohol.

"DEFY camp was a blast and the kids were awesome!" said volunteer mentor Staff Sgt. Stacie Myers of the 17th Medical Group, also the president of Airmen Against Drunk Driving. "It was incredibly hard to function with the 'drunk goggles' on," Sergeant Myers added. "The kids laughed at me for nearly taking out a flag pole!"

Airman 1st Class Sin Won, another volunteer member from the 17th Comptroller Squadron said, "It was a wonderful experience getting to know the kids and seeing them learn new things."

Also included in the program were a visit from the base nutritionist, physical training which included a 1-mile run around the base track, swimming activities at both China Beach and the McGarr Pool, bowling, ceramics painting at the base arts and crafts center and many other fun activities.

"I didn't want it to end," said 9-year-old Keegan Pace, one of the participants. "Why can't we go again next week?"
