The Goodfellow Fire Emergency Services Flight, part of the 17th Civil Engineer Squadron, was selected as Air Education and Training Command's Department of Defense Fire Department of the Year May 21.

According to Senior Master Sgt. Michael Amacker, the functional manager for Fire Emergency Services, the unit proved to be number one out of nine other fire departments across the command rated in the Small Department category.

"This is actually a 2006 award and we are very proud to be selected," said Assistant Fire Chief Freddie Smith of the Goodfellow Fire Department.

"We also won this award in 2005," the Fire Chief added, noting the department's back-to-back accomplishments.

The competition is based on four criteria: Customer Service, Innovativeness, Implemented Quality Management Principles and Initiatives, and Quality of Life Initiatives.

A compilation of all the department's accomplishments in these categories was submitted for the MAJCOM (major command) award. AETC's selection of the department automatically submits them for Air Force-level competition.

The award will be presented to the Fire Chief at the Fire Chiefs Conference in August. The announcement of the Air Force-level winner is also expected in August.
