Colonel Thomas L. Schmidt is the Vice Commander, 17th Training Wing, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. As principal assistant to the Wing Commander, he provides support for training nearly 14,000 fire protection, special instruments, and intelligence experts for the United States Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, government civilian agencies, and allied nations.
Colonel Schmidt is responsible for implementing the commander's policies and directing wing staff offices. He is also responsible for health promotions, civilian cost management, energy conservation committees and is a focal point for readiness posture. He also serves as commander during the incumbent's absence.
Colonel Schmidt received his commission in 1992 through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. He has served in various Air Traffic Control, Airfield Operations and Airspace Management assignments across four Major Commands, including tours in California, Oklahoma, Germany, and New Mexico, as well as deployments to Saudi Arabia/Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Iraq. Prior to his current assignment, he spent five years in Air Education and Training Command, where he served as Commander of a Basic Military Training squadron and Deputy Division Chief on the Headquarters Staff, and one year attending Senior Developmental Education at the National War College.
