10/30/2012 - GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- In 1990, President George H. Bush approved November as Native American Heritage Month to celebrate and recognize the culture, heritage and history of American Indians and Alaskan Natives.

Since then, every year on the first of November, the President of the United States issues a proclamation for this month to "commemorate their enduring achievements and reaffirm the vital role American Indians and Alaska Natives play in enriching the character of our Nation."

"Native Americans stand among America's most distinguished authors, artists, scientists, and political leaders, and in their accomplishments, they have profoundly strengthened the legacy we will leave our children. So, too, have American Indians and Alaska Natives bravely fought to protect this legacy as members of our Armed Forces. As service members, they have shown exceptional valor and heroism on battlefields from the American Revolution to Iraq and Afghanistan," said U.S. President Barack Obama.

Goodfellow is holding events throughout the month to help all base personnel become involved in the remembrances of Native American heritage.

First, on Nov.7, the Youth Center will be constructing dream catchers with children, ages 8-13. On Nov. 8, there will be a digital scavenger hunt for five teams of 10 trying to find and take pictures at various landmarks around the base. Then, on 16 November, Barbara Rouse will be teaching a cooking class at the Health and Wellness Center to learn an age old home recipe for fried corn. The next day, Nov.17, is Santa's Market/Community Appreciation Day for Goodfellow and there will be an Inter-Tribal Native American Dance Organization performing at the High Bay. On Nov. 24, a bus will be taking anyone interested to Paint Rock to view pictographs made by local Native Americans over 500 years ago. Finally, on Nov. 27, there will be a story hour and craft time at the new Consolidated Learning Center Library for any children ages five and under.

There are many happenings this coming month which we hope you will take advantage of. If you have any questions, would like more information, or would like to sign up for any events, please feel free to contact Master Sgt. Kaleah Hodges at Kaleah.Hodges@goodfellow.af.mil or at (325) 654-3415.
