Oct. 26 marks the anniversary of Maj. Carswell's heroic flight

GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --   Maj. Horace S. Carswell, World War II bomber pilot, earned the Medal of Honor for his brave sacrifice, over the South China Sea, 70 years ago Oct. 26, 1944.

After a bombing mission, Carswell's aircraft had two dead engines and another one failing. He kept his aircraft steady while eight crewmembers evacuated. Carswell, his injured co-pilot and a crewmember with a damaged parachute died during a crash landing.

Goodfellow's Carswell Field House is named in his honor.

Carswell was stationed at Goodfellow in the early 1940's as an instructor. He married a San Angelo native, Virginia Ede, and they had a son, Robert Ede Carswell.
