17th Training Wing

Mission: We Train, Transform, and Empower joint and coalition warriors.

Vision: Lead Fire and Information Warfare (IW) training and concepts for the Air Force.

Organization: The 17th Training Wing is composed of the 17th Training Group, 517th Training Group, 17th Mission Support Group and 17th Medical Group.

The wing also provides support to Army, Navy and Marine Corps on-base units, as well as seven other partner organizations and Angelo State University's Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

The wing trains Air Force 1N1, 1N2, 1N3, 1N4, 1A8, 1N0, 1N8, 9S100, officer 14N and firefighters from all branches. 

There are 17th TRW units at the Defense Language Institute, Calif., Corry Station, Fla., Fort Huachuca, Ariz., and DLI-Washington, Va., which also conducts intelligence training.

The wing is also responsible for writing the Career Development Courses for the Air Force Specialty Codes, which it trains.

Lineage
Established as 17th Bombardment Wing, Light, on May 8, 1952 and activated on May 10, 1952. It was redesignated 17th Bombardment Wing, Tactical, on Oct 1,1955 then inactivated on Jun 25, 1958. Redesignated 17th Bombardment Wing, Heavy, and activated, on Nov 15, 1962 and again inactivated on Sep 30, 1976. A further redesignation, this time as the 17th Reconnaissance Wing on Jan 20, 1982 and activated on Oct 1,1982. Inactivated on Jun 30, 1991. It was redesignated once again as the current 17th Training Wing, and activated, on Jul 1, 1993.

Operations
Replaced 452d Bombardment Wing, Light, in South Korea. Conducted combat operations in Korean War, May 10, 1952 - Jul 27, 1953, including night intruder light bombardment missions against enemy supply centers, communications and transportation facilities; interdiction of North Korean railroads; armed reconnaissance; and close air support for ground forces. Replaced 4043d Strategic Wing in Feb 1963. Furnished B-52 aircrews and KC-135 aircraft and crews to SAC units involved in combat operations in Southeast Asia, 1965-1975. Moved without personnel or equipment to Beale AFB, CA, on Sep 30, 1975 and absorbed resources of 456th Bombardment Wing, including B-52G and KC-135Q aircraft. Between 1982 and 1991 flew tactical and strategic surveillance missions over Western Europe. Received the Cullen Trophy for providing "the greatest contribution to the intelligence gathering efforts of SAC" in 1989 and 1990. During 1990-91, wing assets and personnel supported operations in Southwest Asia by ferrying aircraft and equipment from RAF Alconbury, England, to Taif, Saudi Arabia. Beginning in 1993, developed and delivered cryptologic, intelligence, and other training to U.S. and allied military and U.S. government students.
