Health promotions hosts teen cook off Published May 1, 2017 By Staff Sgt. Joshua Edwards 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Elizabeth Burmeister, 17th Medical Operations Squadron health promotion coordinator, hosted a Teen Chef Challenge at the Taylor Chapel April 28. The contest pitted four teams against each other to prepare a yogurt parfait and a quesadilla, with a goal of teaching teens about healthy eating and portion control. “We wanted to have the kids cook healthy meals that are simple,” said Burmeister. “Too much nowadays kids are stuck going more towards fast food options because our brains are hardwired into wanted to pick those easy options.” Without the use of the internet, the contestants had to pull from their past experiences. “I almost burnt my house down making spaghetti,” laughed Jacob Downs, Teen Chef Challenge participant. To wrap up the challenge, four judges tasted the creations and picked one team as the winner. “I think it went great,” said Burmeister. “This is the first time I held a Teen Chef Challenge and everybody seemed very enthusiastic. The judges were fantastic. If we had cameras rolling in here all night, it would have been just like on TV.” Ki Wilburn, Lizzy Maldonado, and Ashtyn Reed won the contest with their mixed fruit and granola parfait, and roasted red pepper and chicken quesadilla.
