San Angelo community and civic leaders toured the 17th Training Wing for the 12th time to learn about Goodfellow’s mission and its relationship with the community April 12. The tour is part of monthly events hosted by Leadership San Angelo, a group made up of active and upcoming community leaders.

The tour began at the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce building, where the leaders gathered on a bus and departed for Goodfellow. On base, they received a Wing Mission Brief, outlining Goodfellow’s mission to train and develop intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance and fire protection professionals for America and her allies. Afterwards, they visited DiTomasso Hall and the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy.

“A tour like this gets us involved with what this base does for the community.”

“They took us through the base,” said Town Square Media General Manager, James Pickens. “We got a great speech from leadership about what they do and why they do it. It gave us some real insight. This is my first trip to Goodfellow. I’m from San Antonio, so I’ve been to a few bases there.”

LSA spends an entire day once a month for nine months touring specific facilities to broaden leadership skills and learn more about the local community. Goodfellow’s tour is a part of chamber day, a special course for the group where they pick an important topic to discuss.

Goodfellow leads the Air Force in Public-Public and Public-Private initiatives that promote cooperation between bases and their local communities. Goodfellow and San Angelo currently share 29 P4 initiatives.

“A trip like this helps the relationship,” said Pickens. “A tour like this gets us involved with what this base does for the community. People quite often don’t know how it affects their day to day life.”
