Read to Me event honors military Published April 24, 2018 By Senior Airman Randall Moose 17th Training Wing Public Affairs SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Students and teachers from multiple San Angelo schools gathered at the San Angelo courthouse to read and honor military members from Goodfellow Air Force Base April 20. “This is our 27th annual Read to Me march around the court house,” said Children’s Librarian for the Tom Green County Library System, Sally Meyers. “The purpose is to give the children a voice and have them say, ‘read to me,’ as a reminder to grandparents, parents, guardians, teachers and the community.” Students marched around the courthouse chanting, “read-to-me.” “It is very important to read to children throughout their life, starting at a very early age,” said Meyers. “So they march, then split up into groups where they will be read to by middle schoolers.” The Tom Green County Library marked the 2018 gathering as a time for the students to thank military and veterans for their service. “I have been a librarian for 27 years and I found out that Goodfellow members come to the library. It’s one of the first things they do. They get a library card wherever they are stationed. They come in and we get to know them. We are so proud that our town has Goodfellow and we want to honor and recognize them for their service.” Each veteran at the event received a Star Reader medallion for their service. “The importance of reading can’t be overstated,” said Airman 1st Class Nathan Collins, 316th Training Squadron trainee. “Especially when kids are this young. Being in the position to encourage that activity is something really special.”
