Ready for the Ruckus?

3rd Annual Ruckus at the Rec. Camp, 2018

3rd Annual Ruckus at the Rec. Camp, 2018

Mark your calendars, this year’s 3rd Annual Ruckus at the Rec. Camp, Saturday September 28, is chock full of attractions including Country Artist Bri Bagwell, a car and motorcycle show with “Misfit Garage” Master Mechanic Tom Smith, live music, food trucks and three international championship cook-offs.

The Ruckus will run from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is open to both Team Goodfellow and the general public. Food trucks will be selling food from noon to 9 p.m. and there will be unlimited brisket and chili tasting from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for $10, where the People’s Choice Award will be decided from ballots collected during the all-you-can-eat.

“This year’s Ruckus at the Rec. Camp is gearing up to be the best one yet,” said the 17th Force Support Squadron Marketing Director Liz Wilkinson, who is also this year’s master of ceremonies.

The car and motorcycle show starts at 10 a.m. with judging beginning at noon and the awards presentation at 3 p.m. Car show vehicle entries will be based on category and type of vehicle. Last year’s show featured 60 vehicles from the early 1900’s to the present.

Most of the day will revolve around food and cook-offs.

“It’s great for people and the community,” said last year’s Squadron Chili Winner, Russell Dunlap. “You have all this food for everyone to come out and enjoy.”

Cook-off categories include chicken, beans, ribs, intramural (squadron) chili, anything goes chili, brisket and Terlingua chili. The barbeque is an International Barbeque Cookers Association Sanctioned cook-off and the 44th Annual Armed Forces International Terlingua Chili Cook-off winners earn competition rights to the Terlingua International Chili Championship later this year.

The top ten BBQ cooks will be recognized and their points forwarded to IBCA.

The chili cook-off began 44 years ago, as a way to boost morale and started in one of the hangars on base. After a couple of years, the base contacted organizers of the Terlingua Chili Cook-off and Goodfellow became the home of the Armed Forces International Terlingua Chili Cook-off.

On the first Saturday of November, the Chili Appreciation Society International will hold the Terlingua International Chili Championship in Terlingua, Texas. A tradition complete with an annual proclamation from the Governor declaring “Chili Appreciation Society International Day” in Texas!

Awards will be presented at 6 p.m. for all the culinary competitions. Afterward, stick around for Bri Bagwell’s live concert and indulge in food from the contests and vendors!

According to Las Cruces magazine, “Bri Bagwell has been making a name for herself in the country music industry. She has released four albums, performed at some of the hottest live music venues in Texas, appeared on Country Music Television, and signed with one of the most prestigious talent agencies.”

Free transportation will run from Goodfellow to the Rec. Camp from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Admission is free to all Department of Defense ID holders and $5 for all others.
