Goodfellow hosts annual Polar Bear Run and Swim

Members of Goodfellow Air Force Base, braved the 37 degree morning to hit the trails at the Goodfellow Recreation Camp for a 5K and plunge into the 42 degree waters of Lake Nasworthy Feb. 9.

The Polar Bear Run and Swim is an annual tradition for Goodfellow. Individuals participated in one or multiple events including a run, swim and costume contest. The event finished with food around a fire, complete with S’mores.

“This event is directed towards squadrons to come out and build morale,” said Recreation Director Katie Peeples. “It gives the students and permanent party something fun to do together, even if it is a bit cold.”

Col. Ricky Mills, 17th Training Wing commander, presented awards to the top male and female runners and also best costume of the day. Airman Jenica Lock, 312th Training Squadron student, received the top female runner award and Airman 1st Class Andrey Chebotaev, 315th Training Squadron student received the top male runner award. 2nd. Lt. Christian Nazario, 315th TRS student, won the best costume of the day award. The 312th TRS snagged the trophy for the most squadron participants for the second year in a row.

“Coming out here and doing this is just fun,” said 2nd Lt. Christian Gilbert, 315th Training Squadron student. “It shocks the breath right out of you, but once you get past that it is actually very refreshing.”
