Who: Staff Sgt. Brandon Pettit

Unit: 17th Medical Support Squadron

Duty Title: Diagnostic Imaging Technologist

This week’s Spotlight features Staff Sgt. Brandon Pettit, 17th Medical Support Squadron diagnostic imaging technologist, a member of 17th Medical Group. This is how he supports the 17th Training Wing’s mission and balances the Air Force and his personal life.

How does your job support the 17th Training Wing's mission?

Our x-ray capabilities are ready and available all throughout the duty day. We give full support to all students, active duty, dependents and veterans in the local area. We support the 17th Training Wing’s mission by diagnosing and allowing the providers an expeditious resolution so our students can complete their training requirements. This permits our soon to be permanent party members to carry their remarkable training to their gaining base with as little setbacks as possible.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

The most gratifying aspect of my career is knowing that I have the means to detect any abnormalities in the body. Therefore, we are the beginning stage to most of the curable diseases, bone, muscles and ligament malfunctions or sicknesses.

What has been your biggest challenge in the military, and how did you overcome that challenge?

The biggest obstacle I have faced is balancing my family life with my military career. The way I overcome this is by not bringing work home. So when I can put my Air Force duties to the side to be with my family, I need to cherish that time and capitalize my family time to the fullest. This allows me to be the world’s greatest husband and dad.

What has been your most memorable experience in the military?

Deploying is my most memorable experience in the military. I regained a sense of purpose on why I joined the Air Force. Knowing that what I do has a bigger meaning in life is a rewarding feeling.

What is one piece of information or advice you would like to pass on?

Life is short and fast and the Air Force is demanding. Try to find the right balance of job success, recreation time and family time. Do not over consume yourself in just one aspect.
