Angelo State University Air Force ROTC cadets completed their annual field training exercise at Goodfellow, April 25.

The cadets were given various scenarios where they put their knowledge of first aid and combat readiness to the test. They learned how to administer first aid in the field and trained alongside Goodfellow’s Marine students who played the role of the adversary.

“We are helping the Air Force cadets from the local college train and learn how to be leaders and handle tough situations,” said Lance Cpl Samuel Hooker, a 316th Training Squadron student. “I like training exercises like this. I think they are really important, and that everyone needs to take them as seriously as they can because, one day, this could be a real situation for them.”

The Marines worked to create realistic situations to gauge how the cadets would react and handle the different circumstances. The training gave the cadets an idea of what they may encounter if ever in a combat situation.

The cadets also took on leadership roles in the simulated deployed environment to protect the forward operating base from opposing forces.

“We are out here to test leadership and to simulate a deployed environment” said Cadet 3rd Class Jacob Wolda, an Angelo State University Air Force ROTC cadet. “It’s good to get experience in a controlled environment rather than an uncontrolled environment”

This training allows cadets to get hands-on experience in a safe learning environment while also having to deal with the elements. Events such as this also strengthen the relationship between Goodfellow and its community.

“Thanks to Goodfellow for having us out here,” said Wolda. “They don’t have to do this but they do. Everyone loves doing this. We always have a lot of people turn out just because it’s a fun learning experience.”
