GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Col. Andres Nazario, 17th Training Wing commander, signed two intergovernmental support agreements, solidifying the first and second agreements of its kind between Goodfellow AFB and at Angelo State University on Aug. 21.
The first of two agreements, known as the Doolittle Scholars Program, provides an education partnership for Goodfellow instructors. This IGSA specifically allows an Air Force Base or Wing to directly develop military faculty in a public academic institution.
Up to 20 Goodfellow instructors will have the opportunity to earn 12 to 15 college credits focusing on modern instructional methods and techniques and can choose to continue to pursue their bachelor’s degree through ASU after the completion of the program.
The second agreement, Contracted Quarters IGSA, provides Goodfellow’s technical training students with living quarters, food service and access to ASU's recreation center. This IGSA is the first of its type in the Department of Defense.
With 50 agreements already in-place between the city and base, Goodfellow continues to set the benchmark for maximizing and expanding its resources through community connections, which ultimately sets a higher community engagement standard throughout the DOD.
“The signings today are a true testament to the drive and passion it takes to develop a community partnership,” said Air Force Community Partnership Specialist, Ms. Stephanie Grunze-Swanson. “These agreements facilitate enhanced teaching capabilities and partnership, and provide living facilities for Airmen at ASU until a more permanent facility is established on Goodfellow Air Force Base.”
Nazario said these agreements between ASU, the City of San Angelo, and Goodfellow are the first of its kind for Goodfellow, to some extent the Air Force, and together they blaze new trails for the DOD.
