2020 has brought interesting challenges to every community member. However, the risks of fire and life safety emergencies continue to threaten Goodfellow members. Knowing how to react during these events is critical to keep our members as safe as possible.

“Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” is 2020’s Fire Prevention Week Campaign slogan. Approximately 470 home cooking fires are reported daily, resulting in nearly 550 deaths each year. Many fire-related injuries/deaths are preventable when families take a serious look at home safety and fire prevention.

“We stress the importance of home fire safety education to all of our customers,” said Deputy Fire Chief Richard Alter. “Make sure to remind kids about escape plans and how to report emergencies. These simple steps can prevent the loss of loved ones when disaster strikes.”

Having a plan is one thing, but ensuring everyone in the house knows and practices it is crucial. A simple plan, coupled with working smoke alarms, significantly increases a family’s chances of surviving a catastrophic fire.

Fire Prevention Week offers GAFB firefighters an excellent opportunity to remind our residents about fire prevention and life safety awareness at work and home.

While Covid-19 has significantly changed current operations, our fire service will still use this time to support this year’s campaign as safely as possible.
