The Fourth of July

The day we celebrate the anniversary of our independence can mean so many different things for all of us. Some of the most predominant things we'll find ourselves enjoying on this four day weekend are potentially dangerous; such as using fireworks, traveling and all-around participating in outdoor activities.

Since fiscal year 2010, the Air Force has experienced six fireworks related mishaps, with two of them causing permanent partial disabilities. Even the four other fireworks related mishaps were traumatic, as they accounted for a total of 171 lost duty days. Sadly, someone found these things out the hard way, as noted in the mishap report: Person lit a firework (mortar) which was in his lap while sitting in his private motor vehicle. The fireworks exploded and the person suffered second and third degree burns to his upper legs and right hand. I could not possibly include every scenario that could put you in harm's way, but listed are the most common.

Fireworks
It is illegal to possess or use fireworks within 5,000 feet of and inside the San Angelo city limit (a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $2,000). This area includes the Landings base housing, off of Paint Rock Road.

San Angelo Fire Marshal, Ross Coleman, urges everyone to follow these basic firework safety tips:
· Always read and follow label directions.
· Have an adult present.
· Buy from reliable sellers.
· Use outdoors only.
· Always have water, a garden hose and a bucket on hand.
· Never experiment or make your own fireworks.
· Light only one firework at a time.
· Never re-light a dud firework. Wait 15-20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water.
· Never give fireworks to children.
· If you must store fireworks, do so in a cool dry place.
· Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water, then disposing of them in your trashcan. Leaving used, discarded fireworks on the ground is littering.
· Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
· Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
· Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
· The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework.
· Stay away from illegal explosives.
Remember to be safe and have fun this holiday weekend.
