The Youth Center hosted a Sideline Sports camp on base from June 10 to 14, featuring different non-traditional sports each day to include ultimate Frisbee, badminton, water polo, fencing and lacrosse.

Sideline Sports is an Air Force contracted youth camp who introduce sports the children might not have seen before.

"We still feature sports like basketball and football at the Youth Center, but we want to introduce them to some other sports that could become a lifelong activity," said Shandy Scott, 17th Force Support Squadron director of youth programs. "Our goal is to always keep the kids active and involved."

Every day, the coaches start the children's activities with a team building exercise emphasizing the importance of communication.

The Sideline Sports coaches said as the exercises progress throughout the week, the more the children converse about how to accomplish goals and the leaders in the group would present themselves.

After the teambuilding exercise, the coaches teach the children the fundamentals of the sport for the day and hold competitions. During ultimate Frisbee day, the children divided into two teams and competed by seeing which team could throw more Frisbees into a hula hoop in a one minute span.

"I think it's really fun," said Michael Harris, a youth participant. "The competition and team building is the most fun so far."

Once the children completed daily training, they then played the designated sport for rest of the day.
