Knocking it out of the field Published April 22, 2013 By Airman Jessica Keith 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Team Goodfellow members gathered at the Mathis Fitness Center softball field for a Home Run Derby competition, April 22. "This was a great chance for Team Goodfellow to get together and have fun, boost morale and win some cool prizes," said Diamond McClendon, Mathis Fitness Center assistant special event coordinator. The event consisted of two rounds with just one goal: hit as many home runs as possible in 10 pitches. Army Spc. Roberto Lopez, 344th Military Intelligence Battalion student, won first place with four home runs, earning a new baseball bat, batting gloves and a $50 gift card to a local fitness store. To count as a home run, the batter had to hit the ball over the fence. Army Staff Sgt. Lance Womack, 344th MIB student, did not place, but said he had a good time. "I just wanted to go out and compete," he said. "I played baseball growing up and it's a great stress reliever and I enjoy good natured competition." Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Marlon Squires, Navy Center for Information Dominance Detachment student, said he wanted a constructive break from studying. "I put a lot of effort into studying and I don't like to leave base much," Squires said. "So I really look forward to events like these. I'm definitely a sports guy. A little competition helps me clear my head and later, study more effectively." Mathis Fitness Center regularly hosts sporting events throughout each month.
