The Goodfellow Recreation Camp hosted the Third Annual Basewide Brisket Cook-Off at the rec. camp here March 16.

Ten briskets were entered into the competition, with all the teams starting their grills around 7 a.m. to start the slow-cooking method of making a brisket.

"It takes time to prep the meat," said Jace Watson, brisket cook-off competitor. "You can't just get a piece of meat, throw it on the grill and think it'll be good. You got to take time, make your ingredients right, cut some stuff off of it; you have to take care of it the whole time you're cooking it. It's a labor of love."

Once all the teams finished their briskets they turned them in to be judged. Judges based their votes on several categories including taste, aroma and presentation.

"The entries were outstanding," said Col. Paul Bugenske, 17th Mission Support Group Commander and brisket cook-off judge. "I was looking for that Texas taste, that Texas barbeque. This was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon."

Donald Casey, 17th Training Wing unit program coordinator, and Donna Casey, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, took home the first place trophy with their award-winning brisket.

Even though the competition came to an end, most of the teams stayed at the rec. camp to spend their time with family and friends while sharing food with anyone who wanted to try some.
