A new director took over the Child Development Center, here Jan. 2.

Joon Auci, the new CDC director, is a retired master sergeant and has more than 20 years experience working with children.

"Our goal at the CDC is to support the Goodfellow mission by providing the highest quality care for the children and maintaining the best customer service possible," Auci said.

The CDC hosts a staff of 28 employees and currently cares for 99 children ranging from infants to school age. Depending on the age of the child, ratios of children to caregivers range from four to seven. Caregivers work as teams to care for children. Being truly successful requires teamwork to extend beyond the classroom.

One of Auci's main goals is to build strong relationships with parents.

"We must work as a team with parents," she said. "We must build trust and confidence in one another so the parent has faith that we are taking excellent care of their children so they don't have to worry about their children and can focus on the mission."

Open communication is key, she added. The CDC staff must be able to ask the parents questions and be willing to answer any questions the parents might have.

"We must have a professional, open and trustworthy relationship with the parents," Auci said. "If a parent sees something she doesn't understand, I want her to ask questions, we may not have the answer immediately, but we'll find it."

Above all, caring for the children is most important.

"Our mission is for parents to rest assured we are taking proper care of their children so their parents' minds are free to do their jobs without worry for the welfare of the child," Auci said.
