Goodfellow celebrates opening of five facilities

GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  The Multi-Facility Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held at the newly renovated Crossroads Chapel Student Center here, Jan. 17.

The ceremony marked the opening of the five newly built or renovated facilities on base. Opening remarks were given by Col. Mark Damiano, 17th Training Wing Commander, and special guest Major General Leonard Patrick, 2nd Air Force Commander.

A tour of the five newly established buildings was led by Col. Brendan Harris, 17th Training Group Commander, and Col. Paul Bugenske, 17th Mission Support Group Commander, following the ribbon cutting.

The renovation of the Cressman Dining Facility began in early 2011 and completed in late 2012. The $5.2 million project specifically was targeted at the installation of a new floor, replacing the structurally failing one. The opening of Cressman helps alleviate the load of students, permanent party and civilians that eat at one of the two dining facilities on base daily.

The new Crossroads construction began in October 2010 and finished December 2012. The construction cost totaled $650,000. The building replaces the former Crossroads which was cramped and outdated. Crossroads will serve as a recreational area for students to engage in socialization and relaxation. Game rooms, a kitchen, a music room, several computers, phones and a large multi-purpose room are available within the new building.

The new Consolidated Learning Center project began in early 2011 and was completed in September 2012. The $12 million project consolidates multiple facilities that were once scattered throughout the base into one building. These facilities include the Base Library, Airman Leadership School, the Career Assistant Advisor, Career Development Course, First-Term Airman Center, and the Military Testing Center for Defense Language Proficiency Testing.

Construction on the Marine Training Leaders' building was begun in November 2010 to replace the former facility the Marine personnel were using. Funding for the building came from remaining funds from another Marine dorm project. The new building serves as the office space for the Marines.

Finally, the new Pipeline Student Dormitory began in November 2010 and was completed in January 2013. The $14 million project will serve as a dormitory for 189 female Air Force students assigned to the 315th Training Squadron, providing more rooms for the increasing numbers of students at Goodfellow.

The addition and renovation of these buildings will better help provide Team Goodfellow with better quality of life and services. These factors help the success of Goodfellow's training mission.
