Thanksgiving is right around the corner and the 17th Training Wing Safety Office would like to take this time to offer a few reminders when it comes to some common hazards associated with this holiday:

Turkey fryers and fires

· Don't overfill the pot
· Don't drop in a frozen turkey
· Fry in an open area with a fire extinguisher near by
· Be aware that fires are common during this holiday
· Now's a good time to check smoke detectors and change batteries

Piggin' out

· Stay in the kitchen while food is cooking
· Keep pots out of reach of children
· Use pot holders and oven mitts
· Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, store leftover food immediately
· Use a thermometer to ensure food is cooked to the proper temperature
· Review steps to take if someone is choking
· Don't eat too much!

Pets

· Keep a close eye on pets
· Be aware that turkey bones are sharp and can splinter causing internal damage
· Know what foods are dangerous to dogs
· Know that animals can get excited when there are a lot of activities going on around them and react in different ways

Drinking

· Let guests know what you expect if they are drinking at your residence
· Have a plan and stick to it
· Designate a driver to pick people up and take them home

Shopping and stressing

· Avoid the crowds if possible, why not shop from home?
· The more traffic you are around, the more likelihood there is for a mishap to occur
· Keep your cool, people are crazy and will become stressed easily during the holidays
· Keep an eye on your children and your wallet in crowded stores
