Using listening devices on roadways

  • Published
AFI 91-207, dated Oct. 27, 2011, paragraph 3.5.6. states:

Wearing portable headphones, earphones, cellular phones, iPods, or other listening and entertainment devices (other than hearing aids) while walking, jogging, running, bicycling, skating or skateboarding on roadways is prohibited to all persons at any time on an Air Force installation, includes all leased, owned or privatized property, including housing areas. Use of listening devices impairs recognition of emergency signals, alarms, announcements, approaching vehicles, human speech, and outside noise in general.

Therefore, for PT purposes the track and cross country trails are ok for listening device use. The perimeter road is not approved for listening devices (single or dual). If crossing a roadway, listening devices need to be removed from ears. This includes where a troop walk crosses a roadway as well as crosswalks.
