Summer is here, school is out and the ideas for vacations and travel are vast, but these days, budgets are tight and travel is expensive.

So what is there to do on and around Goodfellow that won't break your bank account but is still fun?

There is a plethora of things that the base has to offer its members. Often these activities or events are at little to no cost.

The Arts and Crafts Center on base often has workshops on weekends teaching the basics of everything from wood work, pottery, and painting, at minimal cost. They also have an auto shop with do-it-yourself and mechanic provided services.

The Recreational Camp at Lake Nasworthy is also a place one can go to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. Windsurfers, kayaks, and boats of just about every kind are up for rental at fairly low prices. There is also a pavilion for rent, suitable for a gathering or cookout.

But what if you don't have all the supplies you would want for an outdoor adventure at the lake? No problem, the Equipment Rental Center has got you covered with everything from fishing to sports equipment and even outdoor cooking equipment.

The base theater and bowling center are also fun options for a group of friends or family or even a good idea to take a date to.

The Event Center is another place on base to go hang out and relax. Within the center is the Sideline Café, many flat screen televisions with game consoles, a room with instruments you can play, and free Wi-Fi.

If you're looking to travel, possibly go to an amusement park, the Information Tickets and Travel office at the Event Center can assist you with all your travel needs. They offer assistance with air, car, hotel, vacation packages, tours, cruises, and attraction tickets. The ITT office has negotiated military discounts on vacations with many travel companies, so be sure to take advantage of the low priced packages.

Of course fitness is something everyone can work on improving during the summer. Carswell Fieldhouse and Mathis Fitness Center are both fitness areas on base where active duty members can go get toned for the summer. Both centers offer various fitness classes for a fun workout.

Another very productive thing to do with spare time is volunteering. Volunteering is beneficial to everyone involved. It makes you look good and helps someone else out. Volunteer opportunities can be found in the Goodfellow Monitor as well as on the base website.

Whether it be going out to the lake, getting some exercise, or learning a new craft there is always something to do here, so be sure to take advantage of the opportunities available and enjoy your summer.
