Lake Nasworthy was abuzz with activity June 23 during the Sixth Showdown in San Angelo, Annual Super Nationals drag boat race.

The races involve a range of watercrafts from jet skis to hydro drag boats that line up side by side and run a liquid quarter mile at speeds of up to 250 mph in less than four seconds. Some of the boats cost up to half a million dollars.

"It's hard to explain, but it feels like you're sitting in a rocket ship," said Joel Webber, top alcohol hydro driver.

The event is run by the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce with the help of Team Goodfellow volunteers. Over the three day event more than 200 volunteers helped put the event together.

"If it wasn't for Goodfellow we probably wouldn't be able to do this event because of all the volunteers that come out and help us," said Jenni Hutcheson, event coordinator.

Volunteers at the boat race did a variety of jobs from directing traffic, security, and selling souvenirs. A major role the volunteers played was being an essential tool of making the race a "green event" by helping with recycling.

"It was fun, it was nice to get off of base for a little while and help out in the community," said Airman 1st Class Travis Hill, 17th Communications Squadron. "I feel events like this one would not be possible without help from volunteers who make the event more organized."

Even with the temperature reaching above 100 degrees, each volunteer did their part in making San Angelo one of the most successful stops on the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series.
