May is motorcycle safety awareness month Published May 8, 2012 By Neil Townley 17th Training Wing Safety GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration designated May as "Motorcycle Awareness Month" and the theme is "Share the Road". Why share the road? Because way too often operators of cars and trucks overlook motorcycle riders. Usually because they have a smaller profile and are less common on the roads. Their smaller profile also makes them seem to be farther away traveling at lower speeds. Locally motorcycle mishaps range from rider fatalities because of cars and trucks pulling in front of them to simple road rash after laying a bike down while in a curve. Motorcycle riders are encouraged to drive defensively and make themselves "stand out" while riding. Operators of car and trucks are encouraged to get involved and promote motorcycle safety within their unit and discuss motorcycle awareness with their families. Ask your Motorcycle Safety Representative or the Green Knights Military Motorcycle Club for more information.
