Angelo State University Air Force Junior ROTC Detachment 847 Cadet, Abraham Morland, was recently recognized as the top Aerospace Studies 300 (junior-level) cadet in the Southwest Region at a ceremony in Detroit, Mich. Only four cadets nationwide receive this award annually, one from each region of the country. The Southwest Region covers 11 states and 36 Air Force ROTC Detachments.

The award, sponsored by the Air Force Association, is called the William Randolph Lovelace Memorial Award. Every year, each of the 145 Air Force ROTC detachments nation-wide nominate their number one AS300 cadet to their respective region, which holds a board to name the Most Outstanding Cadet from their region. The award is presented at the annual Arnold Air Society National Conclave during the AFA sponsored awards luncheon, which was held in Detroit, Mich., this year during Easter weekend.

The criteria considered for this award include academics, athletics, military performance and other factors, such as Arnold Air Society membership, that helps identify the cadet as an individual who expertly manages time and personal resources to permit extra performance and the capacity to take on extra responsibility.

Recipients of the Lovelace Award are also considered for the Olmstead Scholarship Program during their active duty service, which provides an all-expense-paid year of study at a foreign university.
