April 22 marks the 43rd celebration of Earth Day. Mr. Gaylord Nelson conceptualized Earth Day in the spring of 1969 hoping it would become a dramatic event focusing national attention on the environment. Forty-three years later, Earth Day is recognized by more than 200 million people in 141 countries.

This year, Earth Day will be celebrated the week of April 16-20. There will be a schedule of events open to all residents and employees. The Earth Day activities are designed to raise awareness and to help promote participation in the base's many environmental excellence programs.

Returning to this year's schedule will be a recycled items art contest open to all children aged 12 years and under. Budding artists are encouraged to use their imaginations to produce works of art from recycled materials, such as plastic bottles, cardboard and newspaper.

Entries can be submitted to the Child Development Center before 11a.m., April 19. Prizes will be awarded in several age categories. Please include the artist's name, address, age and phone number on each entry.
