It’s Tax Time! Published Jan. 24, 2012 By Staff Sgt. Paul Martin 17th Training Wing Legal Office GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas-- -- All active duty members assigned to Goodfellow who are interested in free tax return and electronic filing should contact their Unit Tax Advisor. The UTAs will work with you from their desktop computer. Please contact your UTA for an appointment. The UTAs are limited to individual income tax assistance. They are unable to provide advice or assistance concerning privately owned businesses, and complex tax issues may be beyond their expertise. However, taxpayers may fill out a Schedule C and bring it in with the rest of their tax documents for electronic filing. All Others: The centralized Goodfellow Base Tax Center will be open by appointment and only to retirees, dependents, and those without unit tax advisors. The center is slated to be open Jan. 31 to April 15. It is located in the Base Library (building 712) and is staffed by volunteer income tax representatives. To make an appointment, please call the legal office at (325) 654-3203. Do-It-Yourself: The IRS offers the Free File program which provides free federal income tax preparation and electronic filing for eligible taxpayers through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies. The Free File program (http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html?portlet=8) is only available to taxpayers who have an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $57,000 or less. Each participating software company sets its own eligibility requirements and not all taxpayers will qualify for all companies. Carefully review the Free File offer criteria before selecting a company. There is a "Help Me Select a Company" wizard to assist you in selecting a program right for you. Another free service for tax filing is http://www.militaryonesource.com. Please check the website for eligibility information.
