CFC comes to a close at Goodfellow Published Nov. 15, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Jessica Keith 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas-- -- The Combined Federal Campaign, the world's largest annual workplace charity campaign, drew to a close here, Nov. 9. CFC is one of two programs the Air Force supports each year; the other is the Air Force Assistance Fund program, which is usually held in the spring. The AFAF specifically supports Air Force programs such as the Air Force Aid Society and the Gen. and Mrs. LeMay Foundation, while CFC supports thousands of local, national and international approved non-profit charity foundations. Some of the CFC charities include the Meals on Wheels Association of America, the Global Children's Foundation and the American Urological Association Foundation, Inc. This year, Goodfellow raised $164,801, missing its goal of $168,150 by just $3,349. "We got off to a slow start, but toward the end, everyone really pulled together to try to make the goal," said Staff Sgt. Janice Vaughan, 17th Comptroller Squadron and CFC unit representative for 17th Training Wing Staff Agencies. "Even though we fell a few thousand dollars short of our goal, this was a great show of teamwork by the base and a large amount of money was raised for charities." Of all the units on base, the Army's 344th Military Intelligence Battalion came through as a shining example of Team Goodfellow's dedication to the CFC. As the base's largest tenant unit, the 344th MIBN planned to raise about $10,000 for the CFC, instead, they managed to raise almost $37,000, exceeding their goal by 367 percent. "One of the seven Army Values we work to instill in our new Soldiers is Selfless Service," said Army Lt. Col. John Bonin, 344th Military Intelligence Battalion Commander. "This includes putting the welfare of others before your own. I am very proud of all our Soldiers, NCOs and Officers for their willingness to give back to the larger community outside the Army during CFC." "This was a difficult and challenging year," said Brain Brown 17th Mission Support Group Deputy and this year's organizer for base CFC events. "We did much better than we thought we would,Team Goodfellow put a lot of effort into supporting the CFC." Although the CFC has ended locally, the national CFC campaign is scheduled to continue through Dec. 15 and until that time, donations can still be made at the United Way in downtown San Angelo.
