Get ready for fall with a car checkup Published Oct. 17, 2011 GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- With fall upon us and the likelihood of many of us driving long distance to visit with friends and family this holiday season, what better time than to give your car a checkup. Drivers should look at the following areas when conducting a vehicle inspection: Check tire pressures and condition, including the spare. Add a can of fix-a-flat. Thoroughly clean the inside of the windows. Wax the outside of the windows because it acts as a rain/snow repellent. Check all fluids, and replace if necessary. Check the function of all lights and signals. Check hoses and belts. Check the battery, alternator and all electrical connections. Most auto parts stores will do this for free. Replace windshield wipers. Inspect the exhaust system for holes or leaks. Check the heating and air conditioning system (a/c, defrost, heat, vent, etc.) Check lug nuts for proper torque. Check the horn. Consider creating an emergency travel kit for the areas traveling to and from, and check to ensure existing ones are still good. Adjust mirrors properly. If sides of the car are viewable in the mirror, the mirror is in too far. Motorcyclists can run a TCLOC inspection (tires, controls, lights, oil, chassis), or request someone from the Green Knights Chapter 64 conduct one for them; e-mail: gk64@goodfellow.af.mil. Drivers can check most of the items listed themselves, but if they don't feel comfortable doing so, they can call wing safety, (325) 654-3963, or make an appointment with the Auto Skills Center, (325) 654-3233.
