Free admission to San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts

SAN ANGELO, Texas --  SAMFA one of more than 1,300 museums across America will offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer.

SAMFA announced its participation in Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and more than 1,300 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families (up to five family members) from, May 30,  through Sept. 5, 2011. Active duty military include Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and active duty National Guard and active duty Reserve members.

"So many families from Goodfellow Air Force Base feel like our own here at SAMFA," says Assistant Museum Educator, Megan DiRienzo. "We see hundreds of families from Goodfellow at our weekly after school program, Art Thursdays. Art Thursdays focuses on art making in the Education Studio. However, Blue Star Museums features the galleries so that families can still visit while Art Thursdays in on vacation. Museums are for looking and talking about art, and we want those at Goodfellow to come and enjoy that experience with their families this summer."

Exhibitions active duty military personnel and their families may enjoy this summer include:

Through June
Different Directions: Coming Together in Clay.
Explore the work of Harris Deller, Marian Haigh and Ed and Cornelia Gates and their unique approaches to creating works of art in clay.

A Survey of Contemporary Korean Ceramics from the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art.
This exhibit spotlights contemporary Korean artists whose pieces incorporate traditional techniques with innovative methods to create both functional and sculptural works.

The Tile Club - Artists of America's Aesthetic Movement from the Graham Williford Collection.
Enjoy a selection of works by members of the Tile Club, a group of notable New York painters, sculptors and architects who met together for the purpose of camaraderie, painting on ceramic tiles and traveling together on group excursions and sketching trips.

Opening July 7
Form & Substance: The Art of George Tobolowsky.
Explore dynamic, large-scale sculptures made from discarded steel and scrap metal. Large works will be installed on the museum grounds while the artist's smaller work will be on display in the upstairs gallery.

George Mendoza: Colors of the Wind
Declared legally blind as a teen-ager, this New Mexico artist creates paintings derived from visual memories intertwined with dreams, visions, and emotional experiences.

Whatever It Takes - Bert Long
Bert Long works in a variety of mediums, gaining national and international recognition throughout his career for his thought provoking art. He describes the philosophy behind his work as "a quest to help people diagnose their inner self," believing his art to be "the vehicle to help facilitate the process."
