With an estimated completion time of one year, construction has begun on the newest addition to student dorms here.

The new dorm will be a three-story cast-in-place concrete building that adheres to Anti-Terrorism Force Protection standards, with piers that are 60 feet deep.

With an estimated cost of $12 - 14 million, the new V-shaped dorm will have 100 units housing 200 students.

"The new dorm is more progress toward creating enough space to meet student load requirements," said Edward Kerr, 17th Civil Engineer Squadron, project manager chief.

Most of the building's first level is set. Concrete was poured into a reinforcing steel bar mat for the first floor on May 13 and shoring, a process of supporting a structure to prevent collapse is being set for concrete on the second floor.

According to Kraig Stanforth, the Triune-Beck Venture construction company's quality control manager, the site is also a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Buildings Rating System project.

The building will have solar panels and be energy efficient. During the construction, everything is recycled - concrete, metal (nails and steel rebar), paper and wood are separated.

Mr. Kerr said this is the second dorm project currently underway. The first dorm is a 200-unit dorm housing 400 students. Construction is still ongoing and the dorm is expected to open this summer.
