Active-duty members assigned to Goodfellow can file a free electronic tax return with a Unit Tax Advisor.
UTAs can assist servicemembers with individual income taxes. They are unable to provide advice or assistance concerning privately owned businesses, or complex tax issues. However, taxpayers may fill out a Schedule C and bring it in with the rest of their tax documents for electronic filing.

All Others:
The centralized Goodfellow Base Tax Center will be open by appointment this year and only to retirees, dependents and those without unit tax advisors. The Goodfellow Base Tax Center will be open 31 January through 15 April. The Tax Center is located in the base library (Building 712) and will be staffed by volunteer income tax representatives. To make an appointment, please call the legal office at 654-3203.

Do-It-Yourself:
The IRS offers the Free File program which provides free federal income tax preparation and electronic filing for eligible taxpayers through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies.

The Free File program (http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html?portlet=8) is only available to taxpayers who have a 2010 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $58,000 or less. Each participating software company sets its own eligibility requirements and not all taxpayers will qualify for all companies. Carefully review the Free File offer criteria before selecting a company. There is a "Help Me Select a Company" wizard to assist you in selecting a program right for you.

One more free service for tax filing is http://www.militaryonesource.com. Please check the website for eligibility information.
