Hawks’ hardwood hoopsters seek help Published Jan. 21, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Anne Gathua 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Goodfellow Hawks, the base varsity basketball team, is looking for players to help the base hoop it up on the hardwood against regional foes. The team constantly loses members due to deployments and permanent change of station, the coaches said. Practice is held Tuesdays through Thursdays from 6 -8 p.m. at the Carswell Gym, depending on what the team has to work on Each practice starts with stretching, sprints, body conditioning, and shooting and defensive drills. The team then has scrimmages, where they simulate different offensive and defensive scenarios, said Staff Sgt. Jamal Mikell, one of the team's coaches. "We try and prepare for the next game we're going to play. We'll focus on what we need to do and then we have a scrimmage depending on how everything's going," said Sergeant Mikell, who's assigned to the 17th Training Wing Equal Opportunity office. Sergeant Mikell said players benefit by learning to play together as a team, which results in improved morale. It also gives a chance for people who played basketball in high school an opportunity to play at a higher level. "People love the competition, travel and being able to still be around the game," he added. Sergeant Mikell said the team plays for pride in themselves, the game and Goodfellow. "It's more than winning championships," he added. "I focus on strengths and team ability, and even though we lose, we say 'OK, we lost,' but we go back to the drawing board." Everybody with a military or civilian ID has a chance to make the team, he said. "It's a good team and I would like to see more support from base populace," Sergeant Mikell said.
