The holiday season is a time for family, fun and celebration, but it's also a time to be extra alert to potential safety hazards.

To reduce the risk of injury, consider these common-sense tips and put safety at the top of the shopping list.

Stop holiday fires before they start. According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 30 percent of home fires occur during the holiday months (November through January), and 35 percent of home deaths happen during that time of the year. To prevent holiday-related home fires:
  • Be sure all indoor and outdoor holiday lights bear the mark of an independent testing laboratory (UL or equivalent).
  • Throw away lights with cracked or frayed cords.
  • Don't overload electrical outlets.
  • Place candles in non-tip candle holders on a sturdy, stable surface.
  • Never burn candles near a holiday tree, curtains, or combustible decorations or displays.
  • Don't leave burning candles unattended and keep them out of the reach of small children.
Holiday trees can also pose a fire risk during this time of year. If using a fresh-cut tree, choose one that's not shedding its needles. Cut the tree trunk at an angle and place it in a large, deep, non-tip stand, well away from fireplaces, heaters and exits. Water the tree frequently and remove it promptly if it becomes dry. If the tree is artificial, make sure it's flame-retardant.

Before lighting the fireplace, make sure the chimney has had its annual inspection. When using the fireplace, always use a fire screen and only burn materials appropriate for fireplaces; never burn trash or wrapping paper in a fireplace.

Following these safety tips can help keep the holidays from being marred by tragedy.
