Goodfellow highlights Energy Awareness Month Published Oct. 12, 2010 By Senior Airman Tong Duong 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- October is nationally recognized as energy awareness month and members at Goodfellow are determined to lead the way down the energy conservation road. Themed "POWERING AMERICA; we're on target", the Federal Government first observed energy awareness in 1981 with American Energy Week, which later became a month-long celebration in 1991 when former President George Bush proclaimed October as Energy Awareness Month. The Federal Government is the nation's largest energy consumer and the 17th Civil Engineer Squadron base energy monitor's goal is to keep Goodfellow on track in doing its part to make the Air Force more energy efficient and to make Goodfellow a model energy efficient installation. "To help achieve these goals we need the assistance of all personnel," said Mary Lumsdon, 17th CES base energy monitor. "Here's what you can do to help whether you are at work, home or play." Get in the habit of turning off lights when leaving a room. Turn off office equipment - computer monitors, printers, copier and fax machines - at night and on weekends. Use task lighting or day lighting when possible. Print and copy only what's needed. Make sure air conditioning and heating supply and return vents are not obstructed. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Turn off personal computers, televisions, stereos and other electronic devices when away. Report energy waste including water leaks, building deficiencies and energy abuses to the building manager. Take the stairs whenever possible. Do not open windows with air conditioning or heater running. Wash and dry full loads of laundry. A washing machine uses 55 gallons of water per load on average. Wash in cold water. Thermostats should be set no colder than 78 degrees in summer and no warmer than 68 degrees in the winter.
