Proclamation from the 17th Training Wing Commander

WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week commemorates the great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed more than 250 persons, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings, serves as the motivating force to bring the men and women of Goodfellow AFB together to build a safety community; and

WHEREAS, Goodfellow Air Force Base is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our base; and

WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and

WHEREAS, Goodfellow AFB fire responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrences of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and

WHEREAS, Goodfellow residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and

WHEREAS, each fire that is prevented at Goodfellow AFB is an opportunity to prevent painful injury and costly property damage; and

WHEREAS, the 2010 fire Prevention Week theme, "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With," emphasizes the importance of smoke alarms in preventing fire deaths, injuries, and property loss.

THEREFORE I, Thomas W. Geary, 17th Training Wing Commander, do hereby proclaim October 2-9, 2010, as Fire Prevention Week, and I urge all the people of Goodfellow AFB to heed the important safety messages of Fire Prevention Week 2010, and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of Goodfellow fire and emergency services.
