Fundraisers are a great way for private organizations and unofficial activities to raise money for squadron events and other worthy causes, however, organizations must be aware of several rules before engaging in any fundraising activity.

While this article doesn't guarantee millions of dollars of revenue for any fundraising event, Air Force Instruction 36-3101, Fundraising Within the Air Force, provides information to ensure fundraising endeavors receive the approval to get up and running successfully.

First, regardless of the cause being supported, POs and UAs are not affiliated with the Defense Department or the Air Force. POs and UAs cannot imply federal endorsement of any kind. This includes, but isn't limited to, wearing a military uniform while fundraising and using Air Force letterhead, insignia or rank on solicitation requests.

The first step to any successful fundraiser is getting permission. POs and UAs must receive approval from the 17th Mission Support Group Commander before fundraising. All requests for fundraising should be initiated through the 17th Force Support Squadron and routed to the 17th Training Wing Legal Office for review.

Additionally, POs and UAs must take into consideration the Combined Federal Campaign running this time of year which usually prohibits any fundraising on base. This helps the CFC maximize participation by avoiding competition from other fundraising events.

When planning a fundraising event, be mindful of the regulations. The 17th FSS can help with questions or concerns about how to handle any issues. Everyone's attention to fundraising guidelines will expedite a fundraiser's approval and maximize success.
