Using sports mouth guards prevents dental damages

  • Published
Sports mouth guards are just what the name implies. They protect the teeth and oral structures by absorbing and dissipating energy generated from a blow to the face or a teeth-chattering collision during contact sports. There are several different types of sports mouth guards which work, but which one is right for you?

Custom-made mouth guards are soft, elasticized rubber that only fit the mouth it is made for. This type of mouth guard is made in a dentist's office or by a professional dental laboratory. Although they are generally more expensive than other types of sports mouth guards, custom-made appliances are widely recommended because they offer more protection.

Boil and bite mouth guards come in a pre-formed shape which can be altered by placing it in boiling water and biting down on the slightly melted rubber, forming a mold. Follow instructions carefully to avoid an ill-fitting appliance. This type of mouth guard can be purchased at most local sports retailers and are less expensive than custom-made mouth guards. They also offer a better fit than stock guards.

Stock guards are the least expensive of sports mouth guards and provide less protection because they are pre-formed and ready to use, which means they usually do not fit very well. However, some protection is better than none.

Since many athletic activities can cause damage to the oral cavity, individuals should choose a mouth guard they feel is suitable for them or their child.

The 17th Medical Group Dental Clinic and the Mathis Fitness Center have boil and bite mouth guards available to anyone participating in contact sports. Active duty military can also have a custom sports mouth guard made at the Dental Clinic. To schedule an appointment, call (325) 654-3050.
