Safety focuses on Critical Days of Summer campaign Published May 25, 2010 By 17th Training Wing Safety Office GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Memorial Day starts the Critical Days of Summer campaign signifying the time of year when the Air Force and our Joint services loose more members than any other time of year. This year's campaign covers a multitude of subjects and each week will focus on one of these subjects in detail. Week 1 - Alcohol prevention Week 2 - Suicide prevention - Year of the Air Force Family Week 3 - Four-wheel private motor vehicle Week 4 - Home and children safety Week 5 - Sports and recreation - water related Week 6 - 4th of July - fireworks safety Week 7 - Grilling and barbeque safety Week 8 - Weather safety Week 9 - Sports and recreation - non-water related Week 10 - Summer heat safety Week 11 - Wingman resources Week 12 - Risk management Week 13 - Motorcycle Week 14 - Privately-owned weapon safety Week 15 - Countering fatigue Reckless behavior accounts for 71 percent of summer-related fatalities. On average, the Air Force loses about 19 members during the summer months, but last summer we lost 21 Airmen; 18 of those in private motor vehicle crashes. So far in 2010, we have already lost 28 airmen in off-duty mishaps. Be responsible and use the right equipment, engage in risk management and be a good Wingman. Ask yourself "what if?" Take a few seconds to use personal risk management this summer and you could potentially save your own life or the lives of those around you. Consider what your friends, family and co-workers would lose without you around. Each and every one of us plays a vital role in our personal and military families.
