Goodfellow exceeds AFAF goal, a win for all Published May 11, 2010 By Senior Airman Tong Duong 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Despite a slow economy and the tendency to put money aside 'for a rainy day,' members here dug deep to donate to a good cause, helping the base exceed its Air Force Assistance Fund donation goal of $57,760. After six continuous weeks of AFAF campaigning and with continual effort from unit project officers and unit key workers, this year's event was deemed a success. "Anytime we can raise money for a good cause, such as the charities that benefit from the AFAF campaign, it is a success," said installation project officer, Tech. Sgt. Dennis Hall, 316th Training Squadron. "Once again, the Airmen of Goodfellow put forth the effort for us to not only meet, but exceed our wing goal." So far base members have helped to raise more than $58,353 and the number will continue to rise as final donations are tallied. AFAF was established as an annual effort to raise funds for the charitable affiliates that provide support to the Air Force family in need, whether active duty, retired, Reserve or Guard. Dependents and surviving spouses can benefit from the program as well. Charitable organizations include the Air Force Village Foundation, Inc., the Air Force Aid Society, Inc., the General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation, and the Air Force Enlisted Village, Inc. The organizations provide financial assistance for emergencies, educational needs or help to secure a retirement home for widows or widowers of Air Force members. While AFAF campaigns in the past started in early February, this year's event did not kick off until March 29 due to reorganization of the wing's donation group. Despite the late start, base coordinators were still able to hit the goal. "At one point in the campaign, around the end of week four, I was somewhat doubtful that we would meet our campaign goal," Sergeant Hall said. "However, in the end our members pitched in and helped us to pull through." While it is difficult to tell how many families will benefit from the amount raised this year, contributions in the past have helped many in dire need. "Last year, every dollar raised during the campaign and then some (close to 120 percent) came back to benefit the men and women of Goodfellow, whether an emergency, an educational grant or loan from the Air Force Aid Society," Sergeant Hall said. "I think it is safe to say, some, if not all of the money raised during this campaign will come back to help Goodfellow Airmen at some point during the next year." Wing leadership is also proud of their Airmen stepping up and donating to a worthy cause. "Time and again, the out pour of support from Team Goodfellow never ceases to amaze me," said Col. Thomas Geary, 17th Training Wing commander. "I know times are tough for some, but others may be down on their luck and that extra couple bucks could set them on the right track. Great job and let's continue the excellent effort." Sergeant Hall reminds members that a one-time donation of $250 or more is tax deductible. For donations less than $250, please check with tax advisors for eligibility.
