Army Rolls to Championship Published May 11, 2010 By Johnny Bustos 17th Force Support Squadron GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- After the Navy/Marine team won the regular intramural basketball season, a first here for a non-Air Force organization, the Army made even bigger Goodfellow sports history May 6 winning Goodfellow Intramural Basketball Base Championship over the 17th Communications Squadron Bats 39 to 35. From the start, the Bats took a quick 6-point lead in the first few minutes of the game. Army answered the Bats challenge making a quick comeback with 3 baskets; with 15:18 left in the first half, Bats barely kept the lead 7 to 6. Army took their first lead in the game with 6:10 left when Jacob Benjamin drove into the paint and scored with a layup giving Army a 12 to 10 lead. But it didn't take long for the Bats to regain the lead again because in the last minute of the game they were ahead by 3. With 15 seconds left, the Army was charged with goal tending on a 3-point attempt by the Bats, giving the Bats an 18 to 12 lead. Army inbounded the ball and drove to the Bats goal. Army's Jacob Benjamin drove in for a layup and was fouled. He scored the basket and got to shoot a free-throw. But the Bats kept the lead as the first-half came to an end 18 to 15. The second half was a different story; the score see-sawed back and forth with no one taking a commanding lead. Army finally took a 6-point lead when Christopher Green scored 2 on an offensive rebound with 2 minutes left. Bats made a game of it when Anthony Calicchio scored with 40 seconds left bringing the Bats within 3: 36 to 33. However, Army's defense held strong for the last 40 seconds taking the Army to their first Base Championship win: 39 to 35. Leading scorer for Army was Derwinn Walker with 10 and for the Bats, Anthony Calicchio with 11 points.
