Local youths win national commissary scholarships Published May 3, 2010 By Defense Commissary Agency Goodfellow commissary GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Goodfellow commissary announced this year's recipients of Scholarships for Military Children, April 26. Matthew Horn and Cassady Hossenlopp both received a $1,500 scholarship sponsored by Farley's and Sathers Candy Co. through the Fisher House Foundation. There were 5,947 applications received from 254 stores. Matthew and Cassady were among only 645 military children to receive the award. Commissary officials attribute the amount of applications to all the hard work done at the store level promoting the program. Applicants were limited to unmarried children age 21 and younger, or less than 23 years old if enrolled as a full-time student, of active duty personnel, Reservist, Guard and retired military members; survivors of service members who died while on active duty, or of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military were also eligible. Other requirements for the scholarship require applicants to be planning to attend; are attending an accredited college full time in the fall of 2010, or be enrolled in a program of studies designed to transfer directly into a four-year program. Applicants were also required to write an essay on the following topic: "You can travel back in time; however, you cannot change events. What point in history would you visit and why?"
