CHECKMATE: Winners crowned at chess tournament Published April 23, 2010 By Stan Hardesty 316th Training Squadron / Chess Tournament Director GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Chess enthusiasts from all branches gathered at the Event Center April 17 to test their skills at the annual base chess tournament. The tournament included categories for military, youth and community chess fanatics. Competitors included active duty, retired, family members and Fort Concho Elementary School "Rookies" chess team members. The intense four rounds of chess between challengers lasted five hours. Second place for the military category proved to be a tough competition as a 5th round for play offs was added. First place winners were: Military - Carlos Ramos, Army 344th Military Intelligence Battalion Youth - Ethan Ruiz Community - Austin Medina Second place winners were: Military - Airman 1st Class Sean Snavely, 316th Training Squadron student Youth - Enrique Castro Community - Arco Ruiz Both Mr. Ramos and Airman Snavely are elibigle to move up to the next level of chess competitions for their branch of service. The San Angelo community and Goodfellow chess enthusiasts make up the base chess club membership and meets at the Event Center.
