Unarmed and Armed Inspection, Regulation and Exhibition, Honor Guard, Warrior Challenge Tandem Drill and Individual Drill...those were the events at the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps drill meet Feb. 27 hosted by Angelo State University ROTC.

"A drill meet, a high school only event, serves two purposes," Cadet Capt. Christine Boswell, drill meet commander said. "For high school students, it is a way to show off their skills in drill while for college students that run the event, it's a leadership exercise designed to test leadership skills and learn valuable lessons on being effective officers. It's also held annually as a recruiting tool and to show support to the JROTC cadets."

Explaining what each drill entails, Capt. Boswell said during the regulation drill the cadets follow commands given to them. During exhibition, tandem and individual drills they are allowed to get more creative and come up with their own routines while the warrior challenge is a test of their physical fitness, she added.

"The drill meets are very important," said Capt. Boswell. "As a former JROTC cadet, participating in drill meets allowed me to see the end result of what my hard work would allow me to accomplish. It truly was one of the things that helped me decide to make the Air Force my career choice and to pursue a college degree so I could be just like those who were running the events I attended."

Capt. Boswell said the teams were very motivated and the event was a great success.

"I am proud of how things turned out and I just want to say thank you to all of our base volunteers," Capt. Boswell said. "Without their help we would not have been able to pull off the event. You are truly a credit to your service," she added.
