Sharks surge to top of volleyball standings Published Feb. 16, 2010 By Johnny Bustos 17th Force Support Squadron GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- The 316th Training Squadron Sharks grabbed a share of first place in intramural volleyball standings by winning three hotly contested matches last week. The Sharks, now 7-1, share the top spot with 312th Training Squadron Fire Dawgs, who knocked off the Navy/Marines team and 17th Communication Squadron Bats last week. The Sharks kicked off their red-hot week with a three-game set against the previously unbeaten Rattlers Feb. 8. The Sharks dropped 315th Training Squadron 25-20 in the first game, but the Rattlers struck back in the second, winning 25-8. The Sharks regrouped to win the third and deciding set 15-11. The 316 TRS endured another three-game set against the 17th Medical Group Cobras the next day. Once again, the Sharks dominated the first game, lost the second, then rallied to win the third game. The Sharks then closed out their winning week by escaping a determined 17th Mission Support Group Junkyard Dawgs team, 25-20 and 25-22 Thursday. The Rattlers bounced back from their first loss of the season by taking out the Junkyard Dawgs 25-11 and 25-12 Feb. 9. The win keeps the 6-1 Rattlers within striking distance of the division lead. The Fire Dawgs earned their share of the league lead with victories over the Navy/Marine team 25-20 and 25-14 Wednesday, and the Bats 25-10 and 25-15 Thursday. There were a couple of bright spots for two of the league's cellar dwellers. The Navy/Marine team broke into the win column with a decisive 25-15 and 25-8 win over rival Army Feb. 8. The sea services squad clung to a half-game lead for sixth place over the Bats, who also knocked off Army 25-16 and 25-22 Wednesday. Army, which now has sole possession of last place, has two chances to record its first win this week as it tangles with the Cobras Tuesday and the Fire Dawgs Wednesday.
