Volleyball season kicks off Commander's Trophy quest Published Feb. 2, 2010 By Johnny Bustos 17th Force Support Squadron GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- Sounds of thunderous spikes, sneaker squeaks and "in-the-dirt" digs are filling the air at Mathis Fitness Center as eight teams are battling it during the intramural volleyball season, which began Jan. 19. The 315th Training Squadron Rattlers snaked their way to the top of the standings after the first two weeks of competition with 4-0 record. The Rattlers notched victories over the Navy/Marine, 17th Communication Squadron, Army and the 312th Training Squadron. Right behind the 315 TRS, the 316th Training Squadron Sharks sport an unblemished 3-0 record with victories over 17th Mission Support Group, Navy/Marine and 17th Communications Squadron. The Sharks will take on the Rattlers in a battle for first place 7 p.m. Monday. The third-place 312 TRS Fire Dawgs boast a 3-1 record with wins over 17 CS, Army, and 17th Medical Group and a setback to the 315 TRS. 17 MSG Junk Yard Dawgs, in fourth place with a 2-1 record, beat 17 MDG and Navy/Marine, but lost to the 316 TRS. The fifth-place 17 MDG Cobras are 2-2. They have wins over Army and Navy/Marine but were bitten by the Junk Yard Dawgs and Fire Dawgs. The 0-3 17 CS Bats, 0-3 Army and 0-4 Navy/Marine teams are hungry for victory, but are improving with each game. Games are played at 6 and 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. The season is scheduled to end March 19. The volleyball season is the first of the nine intramural sports that comprise the year-long Commander's Trophy quest. Ten units are competing for the coveted trophy by entering teams in nine sports. Units accumulate points by having representatives attend Sports Advisory Council, coaches and post-season meetings. The units must enter at least one team in each sport to gain points and earn additional points by having their squads finish as a top-four team during each sport's regular season and post-season tournaments.
